The U.S. Probation Office for the District of Utah is seeking highly organized candidates for a Deputy Chief United States Probation Officer Type II position. This is a high level position and will be responsible to lead, motivate, direct and assist the Chief U.S. Probation Officer in all areas of administrative and management while carrying out the mission of the U.S. Probation Office in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Deputy Chief United States Probation Officer Type II will assist the Chief United States Probation and Pretrial Services Officer in all areas of administration, supervision, and management of the probation/pretrial services office in the District of Utah. This position is the second-in-command and the “alter ego” to the Chief Probation and Pretrial Services Officer. The Deputy Chief will provide leadership in formulating, supervising, and implementing initiatives to achieve organizational goals and objectives. The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the Federal Probation and Pretrial Services system and possess extensive management experience. The successful candidate must be able to maintain a professional demeanor, work harmoniously with others, observe ethical standards, and treat all persons courteously and without bias. The Deputy Chief Probation Officer will report to the Chief U.S. Probation Officer, and will be subject to random drug screening, as well as updated background investigations every five years.
To qualify for a position of Deputy Chief Probation Officer Type II, applicants must be a current Federal Probation or Pretrial Services Officer, with a minimum of three years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, supervisory and/or management experience. The incumbent must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and must possess the following years of specialized experience, one of which must have been at the next lower grade level or its equivalent.

Required Specialized Experience is progressively responsible experience in the investigation, supervision, counseling and guidance of offenders in community correction or pretrial programs. Experience in closely allied fields such as education guidance counselor, social worker, caseworker, psychologist, substance abuse treatment specialists, and correctional researcher may constitute a portion of the specialized experience. Experience as a police officer, FBI agent, customs agent, marshal or similar positions does not meet the requirements of specialized experience. Specialized experience must be earned after the bachelor's degree has been granted.
Educational Substitutions include completion of one academic year (30 semester or 45 hours) of graduate study in one of the social sciences may be substituted for one year of the specialized experience; or completion of a master's degree or two years of graduate study (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) in an accredited university in one of the social sciences or a Juris Doctor (JD) degree may be substituted for two years of the specialized experience.
A degree which relies primarily upon credit for life experience rather than academic course work is not considered qualifying for substitution of educational experience for actual work experience under this section.
The Deputy Chief Probation Officers is required to maintain the medical requirements as all other U.S. Probation Officers. Incumbent will be subject to ongoing random drug screening, updated background investigations every five years and as deemed necessary by management for reasonable cause, may be subject to subsequent fitness-for-duty evaluations. In addition, the Deputy Chief Probation Officer must adhere to the mandatary maximum age entry and retirement requirements. The salary for this position is at a JSP 14/15/16 ($91,781 - $126,618) depending on length, complexity and relevance of experience; educational attainment; and current compensation as determined by the Court. There is promotion potential for this position to a JSP 16 without further competition.
