The use of cameras and electronic devices is prohibited in any federal courthouse or courtroom of the District of Utah, unless specifically authorized by this policy or court order. Except as permitted below, photographing, recording, or rebroadcasting of District of Utah court proceedings and any activity inside of the District of Utah federal courthouse is prohibited. Individuals who arrive at the Orrin G. Hatch Courthouse with an electronic device or camera will be required to either store the item in a locker or leave it outside of the courthouse. A limited number of small storage lockers are available in the lobby to store cell phones or small cameras. No other devices may be stored inside the courthouse. If individuals arrive with a device that cannot be stored in the court-provided locker, they will not be permitted to enter the courthouse with the item. The following individuals are exempt from this policy:
- Court employees and employees of other building tenants who display their access cards
- Attorneys conducting court-related business
- Credentialed media representatives with a signed authorization form
- Others who have received authorization from the Clerk of Court
Credentialed Media Use of Electronic Devices and Cameras
Credentialed members of the media may file an application with the Clerk of Court for permission to use electronic devices in public hearings. The application and a list of acceptable courtroom uses of electronic devices (listed by judge) are available in the Clerk’s Office and on the court’s website.
Violations
Any violation of this policy may result in sanctions, including:
- Revocation of court-issued media credentials
- Restriction or denial of access to future hearings
- Confiscation of a devices
- Other penalties the court deems necessary and appropriate
Exceptions
The court may exclude from this policy investitures, ceremonies, naturalizations, or other similar events. Additionally, the court may permit the use of electronic, digital, mechanical, or photographic equipment as a means of presenting evidence, preserving the record, or as otherwise authorized.
